A Crazy Little Thing

feast of st. valentine valentine's day Feb 12, 2024

By Paul Roberts

It’s love week.

I’m the type that appreciates the reminders of the calendar year. Birthdays, holidays, even sabbath days would tend to pass by unnoticed if it weren’t for the culture and the calendar marking them for me. And certainly, without the sanctification of the day by the Catholic Church with the Feast of Saint Valentine, sometime in the 8th century, I’d likely forget to pause and remind myself of the glorious mystery of being in love.

I have learned from my Beloved - that’s Carol - to take a day like Valentine’s Day and stretch the celebration into an entire week. Easy enough this year, since we are focused on a wedding celebration on Saturday. We will forego any focus on the 14th, and instead spread the wealth of joy and love from Monday, when Cosette and Taylor arrive, through Sunday, when most of my family that has come into town to help us celebrate will bid us adieu. In between, this father of the bride will be surrounded with family and friends whose presence will continually remind me of the wealth of relationships I have that are marked by that crazy little thing called love. So many things going on this week, so many tasks to complete - don’t leave out the love!

I know that there are those who cringe at the St. Valentine’s traditions, and find Valentine’s Day to be painful, or crass, or hypocritical. But for me, I need that yearly reminder to say to myself “I am loved.” And that helps me to remember to love in return.

So, here’s hoping you have a Happy Valentine’s Day Week!

Now I’m off to practice some moves for the father/daughter dance.
