A Front Porch Full of Love

community covid front porch isolation saying yes to help Jan 20, 2022

By Carol Woolum Roberts

Do you need anything?

After thinking to myself, “no, we are fine” after the fourth request, I decided that, when I ask that question of someone, I sincerely want to help.

These requests were the same way.

I started realizing there were some things outside of items needed to prepare our meals that we could use.

Paul has been getting bad headaches this week, and his medicine makes his stomach upset.  Eating crunchy things soothed his headache and helped his stomach.  To one request, I said, we need chips and crackers.

Some bags of chips and crackers were delivered to our front porch.

Carbonated drinks also help soothe Paul’s stomach, and I like them on my throat as well.   I asked another to get some different carbonated drinks, and some sour cream for our dinner that night.

Some bags of drinks and a carton of sour cream were delivered to our front porch.

As a rule, we usually don’t have a lot of sweet things around the house.  But I wanted something sweet, and comforting.  I had been wanting to make some caramel corn for over a week but didn’t have some light corn syrup.  To another request of “how can we help?”, I asked for some sweet treats and a bottle of corn syrup.

Another delivery of love to our front porch.

I wanted to make tacos for dinner.  But was short a few items.

“Can I pick you up anything from Yokes?”  (our local grocery store).

I replied, "Yes I want to make tacos but need some soft corn tortillas and some cherry tomatoes.  When you have a chance, you can pick those up for us?"

Our people reached out.  We let them help.

And the sky seems not quite so gray and gloomy on this rainy day as we remain isolated within the walls our of home.

Thanks for delivering us love on our front porch.

It’s okay to say “yes” to a request for help.

It is all about being a part of a loving community.
