In case you missed it, Carol and I had some fun making plans for a winter wedding last week. Our youngest daughter Cosette and her boyfriend Taylor Barnes are now officially engaged to be married, and while they were here last week we had lots of time to help them make plans for the big event.

One of the special things about getting to spend time with them over the last several years has been getting to know Taylor’s daughter Saphire, now 7 years old and starting 2nd grade down in Moscow. Saphire brings out the goofball dad in me (I’ve had lots of practice), and while they were here I started writing a little ditty about the two of us. The melody line gives me the perfect chance to get in a little ukulele practice, and although writing poetry sometimes comes easy, putting it to music makes it even more of an adventure. And my blog deadline encourages me keep working on small projects that turn into big fun.

A Gem of a Girl

I got an Idaho gal, lovin’ her is easy

She makes my feet want to dance and twirl

She makes me sing a song light and breezy,

Oh Saphire, she’s a gem of a girl

Oh Saphire, she’s a gem of a girl.

When my eyes find her, oh I feel so lucky

She’s worth more to me than the priciest pearl.

When her eyes find mine, everything is ducky,

Oh Saphire she’s a gem of a girl.

Oh Saphire, she’s a gem of a girl.

When life gets rough and I’m feelin’ lonely,

The skies are gray all around my world.

I think of her smile, it’s a one and only,

Oh Saphire, she’s a gem of a girl.

Oh Saphire, she’s a gem of a girl.

I got an Idaho gal, lovin’ her is easy

She makes my feet want to dance and twirl

She makes me sing a song light and breezy,

Oh Saphire, she’s a gem of a girl.

Oh Saphire, she’s a gem of a girl.

Any advice for Carol and I as we prepare for a more formal “grandparentish” role? Some of you old folks out there should be able to share some wisdom with us.
