Enjoying a Bit of Nostalgia

1986 anniversary nostalgia wedding Jul 18, 2022

By Paul Roberts

Occasionally I enjoy a nostalgic look back at the events that took place in some random year, selected for no other reason than I was alive at the time. It’s not hard to do a search to find someone’s list of what they thought were the most important events that took place over the span of a 365 day period.

Recently, I ventured back to 1986 to see what was happening then. The original list had nearly a dozen events for each month, but I’ve pared it down to just the one event for each month of the year that meant the most to me. I think it’s an interesting way for my readers to get to know me even better.

January 20: The first U.S. federal holiday honoring Martin Luther King Jr. takes place.

February 25: The 28th Grammy Awards takes place, with We Are The World winning Record of the Year and Song of the Year.

March 13: Microsoft has its first initial public offering.

April 26: The world’s worst nuclear disaster – the fourth reactor at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant explodes, immediately killing 31 people and with radio contamination reaching the rest of Europe.

May 25: The charity event Hands Across America takes place, with 6.5 million people holding hands from California to New York.

June 2: Regular TV coverage of U.S. Senate sessions begins.

July 19: In the most important social event of the year, Carol Woolum ties the knot with Paul Roberts. A virtual list of who’s who in the Silver Valley gather at the United Church of Kellogg for the ceremony, followed by a reception at the Woolum estate, 516 W. Cameron, where the young couple was feted with a sumptuous feast from Stein’s and musicians from all around the state.

The bride looked ravishing in her custom gown, outdoing the royal wedding gown of Sarah Ferguson who wed H. R. H. Prince Andrew earlier in the year.

The groom was particularly handsome at the after party in his Don Johnson/Miami Vice inspired pastel ensemble.

Reception party goers were heard to speculate that the young couple was destined for a long, successful relationship, as the groom was clearly possessed of a love that would last for all time.

August 5: The U.S. Senate votes for the Strategic Defense Initiative, also known as Star Wars.

September 26: RUN-DMC is the first rap group to hit the top 10 with Raising Hell.

October 9: Phantom of the Opera, written by Andrew Lloyd Webber, premieres in London.

November 29: British-born American actor Cary Grant dies at the age of 82.

December 10: Elie Wiesel, Holocaust survivor, accepts his Nobel Peace Prize.
