Putting On an Act - Part II

arsenic and old lace sixth street melodrama and theater Oct 23, 2023

By Paul Roberts

Counting today, I am two blog posts away from opening night of Arsenic and Old Lace at the Sixth Street Theater. In order to meet today’s blog deadline, I spent some time this morning sowing seed in my morning journal, searching for a topic to wax eloquent about; I followed that with a couple of good walks to uptown Kellogg in search of some inspiration; then I worked in my garden, spreading bunny fertilizer and beech tree leaves on top of several garden beds, hoping to fertilize a small seed of thought into a full blown blog that wasn’t related to the play.

I give up.

Arsenic and Old Lace is the focus of my life. Last week, with Carol’s help, I was able to find just enough brain power to focus on Mullan Jr./Sr. High School students during the day, but evenings required returning to the stage for rehearsal, and immersing myself in my role. This week, and next, the frontal lobe of my brain is going to continually steer my thoughts toward my lines, my set, my actors, and all the minutiae that goes into producing, directing, and acting in a full length play. I’ve said this before - it’s a good thing I like doing this!

So if I fail to respond to your greeting as we pass by each other while I’m walking around town, script in my hand, talking to myself, please forgive. If you send me a text or an email that’s not Arsenic related and I don’t write back immediately, treat me with kindness. The real me will be back, sort of, after opening night on Friday, November 3rd. Until then, I’ll be spending all of my time at the Brewster home in Brooklyn.

And now I am only one blog post away from opening night.
