Sheep Inspired Creativity

college friends delta delta delta hailey ketchum sheep dog trials sheep parade trailing of the sheep festival Oct 11, 2023

By Carol Woolum Roberts

I spent last weekend surrounded by creativity inspired by sheep.

As I gathered in the Wood River Valley of Idaho with 16 friends from college, the plan was to attend The Trailing of the Sheep Festival that was happening in the vicinity of Hailey, Idaho, where we were staying.

Our first taste of the festival was attending the Sheep Dog trials.  Our friend Dianne Deal competed with one of her dogs on Saturday. She met up with us on Saturday morning and we got to meet her dog. Here is one of the dogs in action.

After watching a few dogs attempt to bring some young sheep under their control, we were off to downtown Hailey, where the Folk Festival was located.

There were booths displaying

Wool Art

Artisan Sheep Cheese (I purchased some delicious Black Truffle Pecorino Cheese).

I heard Peruvian singers.

I ate Gyros.

Jennifer, who lives in Hailey, gave us a tour of her town, and her favorite bookstore.

We returned home to our vacation rental and took photos, ate pizza and continued to reminisce about our college days around the fire.

Sunday we said our goodbyes.

Dedra, Kristi, Carolyn and I decided to watch the Trailing of the Sheep Parade, located on the Main Street of Ketchum.

There were more Peruvian Dancers.

Basque Dancers.

Bagpipers.

Miss Lambchop.

And then the Grand Finale.

The 200 sheep, a small part of a large herd that will walk from Ketchum to Gooding, Idaho for the winter.

What a wonderful event to be a part of over the weekend.

Both the festival, and the reunion of special friends.
